PART 1

1. Moondrunk (Ebrio de luna)
The wine that through the eyes is drunk,
El vino que con los ojos se bebe,
at night the moon pours down in torrents,
por la noche la luna nos derrama en oleadas
until a spring-flood o'erflows
y una marea inunda
the silent far horizon.
el sereno horizonte.

Desires, shuddering and sweet,
¡Deseos, lúgubres y dulces,
are swimming through the flood unnumbered!
fluyen innumerables entre las aguas!
The wine that through the eyes is drunk,
El vino que con los ojos se bebe,
at night the moon pours down in torrents.
por la noche la luna nos derrama en oleadas.

The poet, whom devotion drives,
El poeta, guiado por su devoción,
grows tipsy on the sacred liquor,
se embriaga con el sagrado licor,
to heaven turning his enraptured gaze,
al cielo dirige su mirada arrebatada
and reeling, sucks and slurps up
y vacilando, devora y sorbe
the wine that through the dyes is drunk.
el vino que con los ojos se bebe.

2. Columbine (Colombina)
The moonlight's pallid blossoms,
Las pálidas florescencias de la luna,
the white and wondrous roses,
las blancas y maravillosas rosas,
bloom in July's nights
que brotan en las noches de julio...
oh, could I pluck but one!
¡ojalá pudiera arrancar al menos una!

My heavy load to lighten
Para mi pesada carga aliviar
in darkling streams I search for
busco en los obscuros arroyos
the moonight's pallid blossoms,
las pálidas florescencias de la luna,
the white and wondrous roses.
las blancas y maravillosas rosas.

Then stilled were all my yearning,
Entonces, calmado quedaría mi anhelo,
could I, as in a fable,
si pudiera, como en una fábula,
so tenderly – but scatter
tiernamente – deshojar
upon your brown tresses
sobre tu cabello castaño
the moonlight's pallid blossoms!
¡Las pálidas florescencias de la luna!

3. The Dandy (El Dandy)
And with a fantastical light beam
Con un fantástico rayo de luz
the moon sheds a light on the crystalline flask
alumbra la luna los cristalinos frascos
on the blackened, highly sacred washstand
sobre el negro y sacrosanto tocador
of the taciturn dandy from Bergamo.
del taciturno dandi de Bérgamo.

In sonorous, bronzen basin
En la sonora vasija de bronce
laughs brightly the fountain's metallical cry.
ríe clara la fuente, con metálico sonido.
And with a fantastical light beam
Con un fantástico rayo de luz
the moon sheds a light on the crystalline flask.
alumbra la luna los cristalinos frascos.

Pierrot with waxen complexion
Pierrot, con el rostro de cera,
stands musing and thinks:  what makeup for today?
permanece meditabundo y piensa: ¿Cómo maquillarme hoy?
Rejecting the red and the orient green,
Rechazando el rojo y el verde de oriente,
he bedizens his face in a high noble style
engalana su faz con gesto solemne
and with a fantastical moonbeam.
con un espectral rayo de luna.

4. A Pallid Laundrymaid (Una pálida lavandera)
See a pallid laundrymaid
Una pálida lavandera
washing nightly faded linen;
lava de noche los descoloridos linos;
naked, silver-whitish arms
desnudos, los brazos blancos como plata
stretching downward in the flood.
los sumerge en el agua.

Through the clearing gentle breezes
Furtivas brisas se deslizan por un claro
lightly ruffle up the stream.
rizando suavemente las aguas del arroyo.
See a pallid laundrymaid
Una pálida lavandera
washing nightly faded linen.
lava de noche los descoloridos linos.

And the tender maid of heaven,
Y la dulce doncella del cielo,
by the branches softly fondled,
por las ramas suavemente acariciada,
lays out on the darkling meadows
tiende sobre los oscuros prados
all her linen woven of moonbeams –
todos sus descoloridos linos...
see a pallid laundrymaid.
Una pálida lavandera.

5. Valse de Chopin (Vals de Chopin)
As a pallid drop of blood
Como una pálida gota de sangre
stains the lips of a consumptive,
tiñe los labios de una enferma,
so there lurks within this music
así descansa en estos sonidos
morbid soul-destructive charm.
un mórbido encanto destructivo.

Wild accords of passion
Los acordes de una pasión salvaje turban
breaking desperation's icy dream –
el frío sueño de la desesperación...
as a pallid drop of blood
como una pálida gota de sangre
stains the lips of a consumptive.
tiñe los labios de una enferma.

Fierce, triumphant, sweet and yearning,
Feroz y triunfante, dulce y anhelante,
melancholy somber waltzing,
melancólico y sombrío vals,
you will never leave my senses,
tu nunca abandonarás mis recuerdos,
cling to each thought as I think it,
¡te has adherido a mis pensamientos
as a pallid drop of blood!
como una pálida gota de sangre!

6. Madonna (Madre dolorosa)
Rise, O Mother of all Sorrows,
¡Elévate, oh madre de todos los dolores,
on the altar of my verses!
sobre el altar de mis versos!
Blood pours forth from withered bosom
Sangre de tu pecho marchito
where the cruel sword hath pierced it.
ha derramado la cruel espada.

And thine ever-bleeding wounds
Tus eternas heridas abiertas
seem like eyes, red and open.
semejan ojos carmesí abiertos.
Rise, O Mother of all Sorrows,
¡Elévate, madre de todos los dolores,
on the altar of my verses!
sobre el altar de mis versos!

In thy torn and wasted hands
Con tus manos enflaquecidas
holding thy Son's holy body,
sostienes el cuerpo santo de tu Hijo,
thou revealest Him to all mankind –
para mostrarlo a todos los hombres...
but the eyes of men are turned away,
Pero los ojos de ellos te esquivan,
O Mother of all Sorrows!
¡Oh Madre de todos los dolores!

7. The Sick Moon (La Luna enferma)
You somber deathly-stricken moon,
Tú, luna nocturna, mortalmente enferma,
there, on your dark celestial pillow,
sobre el oscuro lecho del cielo.
your gaze, so wide-eyed, feverish,
Tu febril y desorbitada mirada,
charms me, like distant melody.
me cautiva como una extraña melodía.

Of unappeasable pain of love
De una insaciable pena de amor
you die, of yearning, choked to death.
tú mueres, de anhelo, de profunda asfixia.
you somber deathly-stricken moon,
Oh luna nocturna, mortalmente enferma,
there on your dark celestial pillow.
sobre el oscuro lecho del cielo.

The lover, with his heart aflame,
El amante, con sus sentidos embriagados,
who heedless goes to meet his love,
distraído va a reunirse con su amada
rejoices in your play of light –
y se deleita con tu juego de luces ...
your pallid, pain-begotten blood,
tu pálida sangre, fruto de tu suplicio,
O somber deathly-stricken moon.
¡Tú, luna nocturna, mortalmente enferma!

PART 2

8. Night (Noche)
Black gigantic butterflies
Oscuras, gigantescas mariposas negras
have blotted out the shining sun.
mataron el brillo del sol.
Like a sorcerer's sealed book,
Como el libro sellado de un hechicero,
the horizon sleeps in silence.
el horizonte duerme en silencio.

From the murky depths forgotten
Desde la profundidad perdida, los vapores
vapors rise to murder memory!
traen consigo su aroma matando los recuerdos.
Black gigantic butterflies
Oscuras, gigantescas mariposas negras
have blotted out the shining sun.
mataron el brillo del sol.

And from heaven toward the earth,
Y del cielo hacia la tierra,
sinking down on heavy pinions,
bajan oscilando pesadamente,
all unseen descend the monsters
invisibles monstruos
to the hearts of men below them...
al corazón de los hombres…
Black gigantic butterflies.
Oscuras, gigantescas mariposas negras.

9. Prayer to Pierrot (Oración a Pierrot)
Pierrot! My laughter
¡Pierrot! ¡Mi risa
have I forgot!
la he olvidado!
The dream of radiance
¡La imagen brillante
dispersed – dispersed!
se desvaneció, se desvaneció!

Black waves the banner
Negra es la bandera que ondea
upon the mast.
ahora en mi mástil.
Pierrot! My laughter
¡Pierrot! Mi risa
have I forgot!
la he olvidado!

O now return it,
¡Ah, ahora devuélveme,
soul's veterinarian,
veterinario del alma,
Snowman of Lyric,
lírico muñeco de nieve,
Your Lunar Highness,
alteza lunar,
Pierrot – my laughter!
Pierrot, mi risa!

10. Theft (Robo)
Red and gleaming princely rubies,
Rojos, principescos rubíes,
bleeding drops of ancient glory,
gotas de sangre de antiguas glorias
slumber in the dead men's coffins,
que dormitáis en los sarcófagos,
buried in the vaults below us.
bajolas bóvedas sepulcrales.

Nights, alone with his companions,
De noche, con sus compañeros de juerga,
Pierrot descends – to plunder
Pierrot desciende para robar
red and gleaming princely rubies,
los rojos, principescos rubíes,
bleeding drops of ancient glory.
gotas de sangre de antiguas glorias.

But then – suddenly they're rooted,
Sin embargo, los cabellos se les erizan,
scared to death, hair standing straight up:
un miedo mortal los paraliza en su sitio:
through the darkness – like eyes! –
Desde la oscuridad, ¡como si fueran ojos!
staring out of dead men's coffins
desde los ataúdes los miran fijamente,
red and gleaming princely rubies.
los rojos, principescos rubíes.

11. Red Mass (La Misa roja)
To gruesome grim communion,
Para la escalofriante cena,
by blinding golden glitter,
entre el espléndido brillo del oro
by flickering shine of candles,
y la trémula llama de las velas,
comes to the altar – Pierrot!
se acerca al altar... ¡Pierrot!

His hand, to God devoted,
Su mano, a Dios consagrada,
tears wide the priestly vestment.
rasga la vestidura sacerdotal,
At gruesome grim communion,
acude a la escalofriante cena,
by blinding golden glitter.
entre el espléndido brillo del oro.

With hand upheld in blessing,
Con ademán de bendición,
showing the trembling people,
expone ante las almas inquietas
with dripping crimson wafer:
una Hostia de la que caen rojas gotas:
his heart – in bloody fingers –
¡su corazón en dedos ensangrentados,
at gruesome grim communion!
acude a la escalofriante cena!

12. Gallows Song (La Canción del patíbulo)
The haggard harlot
La flaca ramera
whose neck is scrawny
de largo cuello
will be the last
será la última
of his mistresses.
de sus queridas.

And in his skull
Y en su celebro está,
she'll stick like a needle,
clavada como una aguja,
the haggard harlot
la flaca ramera
whose neck is scrawny.
de largo cuello.

Slim as a pinetree,
Esbelta como un pino,
she has a pigtail –
en su cuello una trenza,
gaily she'll bind it
¡Lujuriosamente
around his neck,
al canalla abrazará
the haggard harlot!
la flaca ramera!

13. Beheading (Decapitación)
The moon, a shining Turkish sword
La Luna, una brillante espada turca
upon a black and silken cushion,
sobre un negro cojín de seda,
and spectral vast -- hangs like a threat
como un gigantesco espectro caerá
in sorrow-darkened night!
¡en la oscura y dolorosa noche!

Pierrot restlessly roams about
Pierrot vaga sin descanso
and stares on high in deathly fear
y con miedo mortal fija su mirada
at the moon, a shining Turkish sword
en la Luna, una brillante espada turca
upon a black and silken cushion.
sobre un negro cojín de seda.

And shaking, quaking at the knees
Las rodillas le tiemblan,
oh, suddenly he faints, collapses,
se desmaya y cae.
convinced that there comes whistling down
Imagina, con un susurro tenso,
upon his sinful guilty neck
caer sobre su cuello pecador
the moon, a shining Turkish sword.
la Luna, una brillante espada turca. 14. The Crosses (Las Cruces)
Holy crosses are the verses,
Santas cruces son los versos
whereon poets bleed in silence,
que los poetas desangran en silencio,
blinded by a flock of vultures
enceguecidos por los cuervos
fluttering round in spectral swarms!
que revolotean en espectral bandada. In their bodies swords have feasted,
En sus cuerpos las espadas se tiñen
glorying in their robes of scarlet!
de sangre escarlata.
Holy crosses are the verses
Santas cruces son los versos
whereon poets bleed in silence.
que los poetas desangran en silencio. Dead the head – matted the tresses –
La cabeza caída, rígidos los rizos,
far and faint the noisy people.
el viento se lleva a lo lejos el ruido de la gente.
Slowly sinks the sun in splendor,
Lentamente cae el sol del ocaso,
like a crimson kingly crown.
cual real corona carmesí.
Holy crosses are the verses!
¡Santas cruces son los versos!

PART 3

15. Nostalgia (Nostalgia)
Sweet lamenting – like a crystal sighing,
Un dulce quejido, suspiro de cristal,
rises from the old Italian comedy,
como desde una vieja pantomima italiana,
sadly asking: why's Pierrot so wooden,
se percibe: ¡Qué árido y tosco,
in the sentimental modern manner?
se vuelve el sentimiento de Pierrot!

And it echoes through his heart's desert,
Y hace eco en el desierto de su corazón,
echoes mutedly through all his senses.
eco que resuena mortecino por todos sus sentidos,
Sweet lamenting – like a crystal sighing,
ese dulce quejido, suspiro de cristal,
rises from the old Italian comedy.
como desde una vieja pantomima italiana.

Then Pierrot forgets his tragic manner!
¡Entonces Pierrot se olvida de sus aflicciones!
Through the silver fiery glow of moonlight,
A través de la ardiente luz de la luna plateada,
through a flood of radiance, swells his yearning,
a través de las olas de ese mar pleno de luz – audazmente se eleva
boldly soars on high to skies of homeland,
hacia los cielos de su patria.
sweet lamenting – like a crystal sighing!
¡Dulce quejido, suspiro de cristal!

16. Mean Trick! (Maldad)
In the gleaming skull of Cassander
En la blanca cabeza de Casandro,
as he shrieks and cries blue murder,
cuyos gritos de auxilio desgarran los aires,
bores Pierrot with hypocritic
introduce Pierrot, con expresión hipócrita,
kindness – and a cranium-borer!
cariñosamente... ¡un taladro!.

And then presses with his finger
A continuación, con el pulgar rellena
very genuine Turkish tobacco
de auténtico tabaco turco
in the gleaming skull of Cassander,
la pulida cabeza de Casandro,
as he shrieks and cries blue murder!
cuyos gritos de auxilio desgarran los aires.

Then screwing a cherry pipestem
Después atornilla un canuto de cerezo
firmly in the polished surface,
a la parte posterior de la lisa calva,
at his ease he puffs away,
y con grandes bocanadas de humo fuma,
puffs on his genuine Turkish tobacco
su auténtico tabaco turco
in the gleaming skull of Cassander!
¡En la pulida cabeza de Casandro!

17. Parody (Parodia)
Knitting needles, brightly twinkling,
Con agujas de tejer, lisas y brillantes,
stuck in her graying hair,
clavadas en sus encanecidos cabellos,
sits the Duenna mumbling,
se sienta la dueña mascullando,
wearing her short red dress.
con su falda roja.

She's waiting in the arbor,
Ella espera en la glorieta,
she loves Pierrot with anguish.
ama a Pierrot con dolor,
Knitting needles, brightly twinkling,
con agujas de tejer, lisas y brillantes,
stuck in her graying hair.
clavadas en sus encanecidos cabellos.

But sudden – hark! a whisper!
De repente, ¡oye un susurro!...
A wind-puff titters softly:
una brisa que ríe socarrona,
the moon, that cruel mocker,
la Luna, con una burla cruel,
is mimicking with moonbeams –
imita con su resplandor,
knitting needles, twinkling bright.
agujas de tejer, lisas y brillantes.

18. The Moonfleck (Mancha lunar)
With a snowy fleck of shiny moonlight
Con una mancha blanca de clara luna
on the backside of his smart new frockcoat,
sobre la espalda de su chaqueta negra,
so sets forth Pierrot one balmy evening,
así pasea Pierrot en la noche tibia,
in pursuit of fortune and adventure.
buscando felicidad y aventura.

Sudden something's wrong with his appearance,
De repente, algo le molesta en su ropa,
he looks round and round and then he finds it –
la mira desde distintos ángulos y al fin la ve:
there's a snow fleck of shiny moonlight
hay una mancha blanca de clara luna
on the backside of his smart new frockcoat.
sobre la espalda de su chaqueta negra.

Hang it! Thinks he: a speckle of plaster!
¡Claro!, razona, ¡es una mancha de yeso!
Wipes and wipes, but – he can't make it vanish!
Frota y frota, pero no puede hacerla desaparecer.
On he goes, his pleasure has been ruined,
Y así continúa, lleno de amargura,
rubs and rubs until it's almost morning –
y frota y frota hasta que amanece
at a snowy fleck of shiny moonlight.
una mancha blanca de clara luna.

19. Serenade (Serenata)
With a bow grotesquely monstrous
Con un grotesco arco gigante
scrapes Pierrot on his viola;
Pierrot rasca su viola
like a stork on one leg standing,
y como una cigüeña sobre una sola pata
sadly plucks a pizzicato.
pellizca las cuerdas con un apagado pizzicato.

Sudden! Here's Cassander, raging
De repente, llega Casandro, enfurecido
at the nighttime virtuoso –
por tanto virtuosismo nocturno.
with a bow grotesquely monstrous
Con un grotesco arco gigante
scrapes Pierrot on his viola.
Pierrot rasca su viola.

Then he throws aside viola!
Entonces, él arroja lejos la viola
With a delicate use of left hand
y con su delicada mano izquierda
seizes Cassander by the collar –
toma al calvo por el cuello.
dreamily plays upon his bald head
Soñando toca sobre el liso cráneo
with a bow grotesquely monstrous.
con el grotesco arco gigante.

20. Journey Homeward (Barcarole) (De vuelta a casa)
A moonbeam is the rudder,
Un rayo de luna es el timón
waterlily serves as boat,
y la anémona sirve de barca,
and so Pierrot goes southward
con la que Pierrot, viaja al sur
with a friendly following wind.
con viento favorable.

The stream hums scales beneath him
La corriente canturrea profundas notas
and rocks the fragile craft.
y mece la frágil embarcación.
A moonbeam is the rudder,
Un rayo de luna es el timón
waterlily serves as boat.
y la anémona sirve de barca.

To Bergamo, his homeland,
A Bérgamo, su patria,
at last Pierrot returns;
navega Pierrot de regreso;
soft glimmers rise to eastward,
mientras débilmente amanece al oriente
the green horizon shows.
sobre el verde horizonte.
A moonbeam is the rudder.
Un rayo de luna es el timón.

21. O Ancient Scent (¡Oh, antiguo perfume!)
O ancient scent from fabled times,
¡Oh antiguo perfume de cuentos de hadas,
once more you captivate my senses!
que una vez más cautivas mis sentidos!
A merry troupe of roguish pranks
Una alegre tropa de pícaras desenfrenadas
pervades the gentle air.
satura el ligero aire.

With cheerful yearning I return
Con anhelo alegre vuelvo al placer
to pleasures I too long neglected.
que ha mucho tiempo descuidé.
O ancient scent from fabled times,
¡Oh antiguo perfume de cuentos de hadas,
once more you captivate me!
que una vez más cautivas mis sentidos!

All of my gloom I've cast aside;
Toda mi tristeza he dejado de lado
and from my sun-encircled window
y por mi ventana soleada
I gladly view the lovely world,
miro libremente el amado mundo
and dreams go forth to greet the distance...
y sueño con lejanos parajes de dicha...
O ancient scent – from fabled times!
¡Oh antiguo perfume de cuento de hadas!
