Administered by the Washington Heights and Inwood Development Corporation (WHIDC), La Plaza de Las Americas serves as a micro-business "incubator" for between 20 and 50 individuals. In 2015, WHIDC secured a $3,000,000 "Plaza NYC" award under which the City permanently closed off the street to vehicular traffic and converted it into a park-like plaza that includes a fountain, trees, information kiosk, and public toilet. It also accommodates the vendors market and special events.
